I got this Momitsu Blu-ray player solely because I need a Region A or multi-region player to watch locked Criterion Blu-ray discs in the U.K.. This player has the advantage over straight US Blu-ray players in that it doesn’t need a step-down converter (the current is a variable 110V to 240V): it only needs a travel adaptor to convert the 2-pin U.S. plug into a U.K. or Euro fitting.
First off, image-wise the 799 excels in providing a clear, superbly detailed picture. Of course, it helps that I’m watching fantastic Criterion Blu-ray transfers. But it is apparant that the Momitsu can handle motion exceptionally well, which is after all a stumbling block for many -more expensive, bigger-name- Blu-ray players. Read more...

I have an “old school” component video input high-definition television along with coaxial audio input to my receiver which supports DTS audio. It was great stuff back in 1999 when I bought it. I found this product at a great price, I think, and it fit my needs perfectly. Now I get high-definition picture quality along with DTS sound through my receiver. A very nice solution to keep me from having to upgrade my whole audio-visual set-up to current HDMI format.
There are two negatives to report. One, it makes a humming noise while it is running the disc. Two, it takes a minute to open the disc deck when you hit the eject button. OK it feels like a minute, but it’s probably about 30 seconds. Solution one, watch action movies with plenty of audio and you won’t notice the background hum. Solution two, whistle a tune to yourself when you are standing by the player waiting to put in a new disc. I find Yankee Doodle fills the gap nicely! Read more...

PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed by Panasonic to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction. It reproduces color data with twice the accuracy of conventional systems to keep colors faithful and sharp. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. So that it can render progressive images superbly, expresses motion smoothly, and draws crisp diagonal lines. The DMP-BD55 can decode HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD) and output 7.1ch digital audio signal. The resulting audio is studio master quality sound. This signal can be connected to an HDMI compatible receiver that does not support HD Audio Codec.
