The companies continue to promote Blue-Ray and HD-DVD disc. The problem is in, that this good news actually are the next headache for us – the end users. Let’s return few years ago. At that time we saw similar comedy war with the same weapons different standards for DVD format. At the end, now we have several DVD formats – DVD RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc.

Because now only can guess, what will happen with Blue-Ray and HD-DVD disc and devices I will shortly introduce you their main parameters and advantages.

At this moment with absolutely certainty we can say that the physical dimensions of new discs will be the same as the current known CD and DVD disc. The main difference is in the smaller wavelength of the laser which is used to read and write data on the disc.

By specifications, in Blue-Ray and HD-DVD disc is used laser, who emits light with wavelength of 405 nm (blue-violet color). For example, by specification all DVD devices use 650 nm (red color) wavelength to read and write information on discs. No doubt, this difference of wavelengths mean larger capacity of Blue-Ray and HD-DVD disc.

The thickness of each standard optical disc is 1.2 mm (CD, DVD). It could be summarized that there are 3 layers in the disc. Transparent layer (bottom site of the disc – protection layer), middle layer (in which you can look like in a mirror) and top layer (where you can place your labels). In standard DVD disc, the middle layer (the mirror) is positioned on 0.6 mm deep from the bottom layer. In Blue-Ray disc the middle layer is moved closer to protection layer – on 0.1 mm from the surface. Many people say that the Blue-Ray optical disc is more sensitive to incidentally scratch of protection layer than any other optical disc. Except that, people think that the laser will be positioned very hardly to read the data. In new Blue-Ray players the laser is positioned closer to the disc surface, which treats like risk for scratch. At the end this problem was solved with TDK and their new protection layer. The company specialists think that this new technology give to disc better protection from today’s DVDs.

In HD-DVD disc the middle layer is positioned on 0.6 mm from down surface (protection layer), the same structure like DVD disc. That means that new players for HD-DVD can be vice-versa compatible with current DVD discs.

By capacity factor of Blue-Ray disc will be offered in three variants: BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE. Each of the discs will have two different types – single layer (23.3, 25 and 27 GB) and double layer (46.6, 50 and 54 GB). Except this, by specification the technology will offer multi layered discs, the largest of which will be 100-200 GB (for four and eight layers). For owners of digital cameras will be available 8 cm discs with 15Gb capacity.

Like Blue-Ray, the HD-DVD disc will be offered in three main variants also : HD-DVD-ROM, HD-DVD-R and HD-DVD-RW. The capacity of HD-DVD disc will be smaller than Blue-Ray disc. For single layer disc – 15GB and 30 GB for double layer disc. Pity, but multi layered disc will not be available.

The founder of Blue-Ray technology is Sony Corp. Sony says that main target of the company is to lay standard among the film companies. Till now, Sony gained Walt Disney Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20-th Century Fox, Warner Bros, etc. The list includes also other companies – leading PC providers as Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Dell, LG, etc. Microsoft say that they will not develop the Blue-Ray technology with these companies and will not join the alliance.

HD-DVD founders are Toshiba and NEC. They say that will invest in HD-DVD devices. Movie producing companies like Warner Bros, New Line Cinema, Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures also support and joined Toshiba’s and NEC’s concern. Giants like Microsoft and Intel work together for advancing the HD-DVD standard.

Only the time will show which technology will win larger market share. Don’t forget that the destiny of one or other technology depends mostly on the end user mood.

The new generation Blu-Ray DVD employs a blue light laser to illuminate the pits found in the DVD disc. It results in huge information storage in the same space, as blue light has a shorter wavelength and hence the pits can be spaced closer together. The HDTV – Blu-Ray HD players are designed to play such tightly packaged DVDs.

The summer of 2006 saw the market flooded with an amazing range of players from big players like Panasonic, Samsung and Pioneer. The initial cost of these players is around $1000 to $1800, but it surely will dip with competition. These players are compatible with the 1080p resolution HDTV sets which were launched at the same time.

The technical specifications of the player: 720, 1080 or 1920 x 1080 represent the number of horizontal lines of pixels, with the larger number corresponding to resolution. The printed letter ‘p’ or ‘i’ indicates progressive and interlaced, respectively. These specifications determine the quality of projected images.

The latest Blu-Ray players are designed for a 1080p signal output via the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) jack. Although the current TV sets convert the 1080i resolution of HD-DVD models, the future holds promise for the 1080p native resolution HDTV sets very soon. There are various models and their most prominent features drives market interest.

The Samsung BD-P1000 model costs $1000 (twice the cost of Toshiba’s HD-DVD player). This player is a slim, high quality unit from one of the leaders in the best DLP TVs manufacturers of HDTV. Although many HDTV sets come with a built-in memory card slot, this player has a 9-in-2 Multi Memory Card slot which enables digital photos to be displayed on the TV set. Samsung also promises to add an alarm utility in the player, which would alert the viewer to an upcoming show or event. This model is only a player and does not support recording as of now.

The Pioneer BDP-HD1 player offers some features like Home Media Gallery software that allows viewers to display digital photos, listen to music or watch movies all stored on the home computer, not found on the Samsung. The Pioneer manufacturers are known for their excellent quality consumer electronics goods like CD changer and reliable HDTV models. Hence the player looks promising but costs around $1,800 initially.

The Panasonic DMP-BD10 was launched in September 2006, along with the company’s plasma-type 1080p HDTV. The initial market price is around $1,500. Panasonic is rated to be the most favorite in the field owing to the report of their excellent quality DVD player and HDTV sets. The unit has been launched along with the company’s proprietary EZ-Sync HDAVI feature, which enables viewers to connect and control multiple HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) units with a single remote.

Sony is due to facilitate the HD player compatibility with its Playstation 3 model in November 2006. This model would cost around $600 and should be able play Blu-Ray discs along with downloading and playing games.

I have looked for a player that plays both Blu-Ray and DVD discs well, since I have read that some Blu-Ray players may play either DVD or Blu-Ray discs well but not both. Since I own a DVD collection, I wanted to make sure that a player I would get plays both with good quality. This unit does not skimp on the quality of DVD playback for Blu-Ray or vice-versa. I am satisfied with this unit’s performance. Also, the included 6 foot HDMI cable is really nice, since I needed one to connect this to my HDTV. It comes with a composite cable in case you want to play discs to a standard definition television as well. Connectors on the back include HDMI, Component, Composite, and speaker connections.

Customer Reviews

Great for the price – Richard E. Zwiesler – Downers Grove, IL
I purchased this player on the Amazon’s Customer review letters and also a best buy review from Consumers Reports. The sound and picture is great. It loads a little slow but most Blue Ray players do. The only fault I have with it is it’s looks. Not a big deal though.

What you pay for – ritewinger – New Hampshire, USA
The reviews on this were good, so I hit the button. In fairness, it plays ok, but is extremely slow to load. My unit also has an occasional digital noise problem(snow). Restarting often remedies this. Philips technical was no help. Not a bad unit for the money, you get what you pay for…..

It simply plays Blu-Ray disk! – R. Xu – USA
This puppy works seamlessly with pretty much any kind of Blu-Ray disc. Other brands (like Samsung, Sony, Vizio or Panasonic) have a tiny restriction on the compatibility. But with this Philips model, so far, there is no issue I know of. It does not have the fancy “slick” looking but it simply works!
